A day after Congressman Solomon Ortiz lost a tight election, he said he’s not conceding the race yet and is weighing his options.
Ortiz has been in office for 28 years as the District 27 Congressional Representative from South Texas. His district stretches from San Patricio County to Cameron County. Unofficial polls show he lost by 799 votes to GOP candidate Blake Farenthold.
Ortiz said he is considering a recount among other things in this election.
“The process of reviewing the election results continues today to ensure that every vote is counted, including those of the men and women serving abroad in our Armed Services,” Ortiz said in a written statement.
He also had a message for voters in his district.
“I thank all the people who supported me with their vote in Tuesday’s General Election,” Ortiz said, “It’s simply too early for anybody to be calling this race.”
Farenthold, the grandson of Sissy Farenthold, wasn’t available for comment today, but on his Facebook, literally hundreds of people commented, telling him congratulations.
He wrote: ” Thanks to everyone” for helping get him elected. Now he’s ready to go to Washington DC to be part of biggest freshman class of Republicans since 1993 when they last took over the House.
