Chatter About Coastal Bend Division II 4A Playoffs

The high school playoffs start for the 4A teams in the Coastal Bend on Friday. There are eight teams in the playoffs. Victoria East and Calallen are the district champs for the two leagues, but that only guaranteed them a good seeding in the playoffs. This is playoff football and it’s one and your done. There is no time for bad games or mistakes in these games.

Here are the matchups and what some local media is reporting about the playoffs.

The San Antonio Express News wrote the following about the Division II playoffs bracket.

“Favorite: Corpus Christi Calallen (9-1). The Wildcats have won eight straight since a loss to Gregory-Portland (8-2), another Division II team. There’s no true favorite in this wide-open field.”

In the Victoria Advocate, questions lingered why Victoria East, the champ is on the road and why Victoria West, the 4th place finisher will be playing at home.

“In the UIL, it makes no difference where you finish in district for the playoffs. It has always been that way. The place, time and date is determined by the teams involved. This usually means flipping a coin. I think East would have played at home if Southside had defeated Lanier. But when Lanier won it changed the matchups and East was forced to go on the road and West got the home field. It also messed up Calhoun which would have played at home but wound up on the road.”

The Corpus Christi Caller Times wrote a story about how Calallen has momentum going into the playoffs.

“Any playoff team wouldn’t mind having a little momentum going into the first round. Calallen has plenty after thrashing Ray 55-20 in last week’s season finale.” and

“Calallen opens the playoffs on Friday at home against Mercedes, a familiar postseason foe. The teams have met seven times since 1985, with the Wildcats winning each time by an average margin of 22 points.”
