Coastal Bend 4A Football Wrapup

The Coastal Bend Football teams from the 4A played in the first round of the playoffs. They battled against the Rio Grande Valley and San Antonio teams. District 30 4A teams had great success knocking all of the San Antonio teams outs, while the District 31 struggled losing two tight games with Calallen being the only team to win its game.

Calallen played Mercedes and at first the Tigers were thinking upset. They jumped out to a 13-6, but in the middle of the second quarter, the Wildcats turned on the afterburners. The Cats won 54-19. The turning point in the game was Calallen’s decision to go for a touchdown instead of a field goal at Half. Ray was leading by a touchdown with 3:16 left in the game, but couldn’t hold on to the lead. The Texans gave up two TD’s in 62 seconds in the loss.

Flour Bluff had the task of playing Mission Veteran’s, the district champ from the Rio Grande Valley in a rematch of last year’s bi-district playoff game. Coming off wining three straight games in the district to qualify for the playoffs, Last year, the Hornets were the champs and favorite, but this year the Patriots were the ones favored to win. The Hornets hung tough and even had a chance to win at the end, but Mission Vets stopped them after a controversial pass play.

San Antonio Edison entered the playoffs as district champs for the first time in a quarter of a century. They jumped out to an early lead vs. Gregory Portland at Alamo Staidum, then the Wildcats took over the game.
