Coastal Bend 4A Football Previews/Results

The Coastal Bend has four 4A teams who were able to get by the bi-district round of the high school playoffs. After the first round, we learned a little bit about the District 30 and District 31 teams who made the playoffs.

We can surmise either the Valley teams, who play in the District 32 4A District, are getting better as they played District 31 teams in the first rounds or that district was weak this year. Calallen was the only team to advance to the area round from those games.

In the District 30 games, all of the Coastal Bend teams and they blew out every one of the San Antonio teams they faced. The games weren’t even close. From the records and media reports in San Antonio, Division I teams actually very strong, but the the Division  II were expected to be better teams, but they didn’t even put up a fight.

Calhoun (9-3) and Edcouch Elsa (8-4) had played twice before in the playoffss in 2006 and 2008 with EE winning in four years ago and the Sandcrabs winning two years ago. So these two teams have a rivalry of sorts with these recent playoff games.

If you expected a battle in this game, it just never happened. Calhoun came out hitting on all cylinders. They ran the ball and dominated this game from the start. The Sandcrabs jumped out to a 28-0 halftime lead and won the game 42-12. For the third year in a row, Calhoun claimed an Area Championship.

Calhoun is still waiting to find its opponent next week. They will play the winner of Marble Falls and Boerne Champion who are playing on Saturday afternoon.

VICTORIA WEST vs. WESLACO EAST at 5 pm @ SA Comlander Stadium

Victoria West (6-5) and Weslaco East (10-1) made it to the Area Round in very different games. The game will be played in San Antonio at Comlander Stadium at 5 pm.

The Warriors blew out San Antonio Jefferson 31-3 as the defense dominated the game. This game came after getting killed in three straight district games to end the season.

Meanwhile, Weslaco East fell behind to Ray High School from Corpus Christi 14-0 after the first half. The score was 14-7 with about 4 minutes left in the game. That’s when the Wildcats started their comeback. First, it stopped the Texans on a key 4th down play. They drove down and scored to tie the game. On the ensuing kickoff, Ray fumbled the ball and Weslaco scored the winning TD with :13 left in the game.

Weslaco East is a good team and were expected to dominate District 32 4A. They had some returning players and have played well all season long with their lone loss to the Mission Veterans. Victoria West is in its first season of play. They have struggled at times, but played well enough to finish in 4th place in a tough district league. The Warriors know to win tonight they need to play good defense.

The winner of this game will get undefeated Cedar Park who beat Smithson Valley.

GREGORY-PORTLAND vs. CALALLEN at 7 pm @Cabaniss Field

Gregory-Portland (9-2) and Calallen (10-1) are no strangers to each other and will play in a rematch of an early season game. Calallen is trying to avenge a 13-9 loss, which was its only loss of the season on September 3.

GP’s season was rolling along and they were beating up on everybody until the middle of the season. That’s when they were beat in back-to-back weeks by Calhoun and Victoria East. In those games, they fell behind early and the leads were too much for them to overcome.

Calallen had the benefit of playing in a weak district and dominated it, winning the district championship. Along the way, they dominated every team they played, including victories over King HS and Carroll HS along with its district opponents. The only close game Calallen had in district was vs Flour Bluff where they had to go to overtime to win.

These two teams have changed a bit since that first matchup. The coaches have the benefit of knowing each other well. When GP won, it snapped a five game losing streak to Calallen. While GP dominated early and jumped otu to an early, Calallen was trying a new hurry offense, which was ineffective. In the 4th quarter, they went back to its normal offense and started to do better. GP hasn’t been the same since those two losses in the middle of the season and even struggled a bit with Beeville in its last game.

You can expect this game will be a tight one. The winner will play San Antonio Alamo Heights who dominated Cedar Park Vista Ridge last night.

Victoria East (10-1) and Mission Veterans (10-1) get the prime time game at the San Antonio Alamodome. You can expect this game will be a high scoring affair.

Victoria East has been an explosive offense all season long. Led by QB Ervin Yates and RBs Jonathan Garner and Roderick Warren, this high octane offense has been hot all season long. Even in its lone loss to Calallen, they jumped out early and nearly came back to win the game in the end. Last week, they beat San Antonio Brackenrige 62-28.

Mission Veterans comes into this game a big underdog. They are led by QB Adrian Morales. He has passed for more than 2,000 yard and thrown for 30 TDs. He has three big targets and they will come out passing. Mission Vets beat Flour Bluff last week 30-24.

There will be two factors in this game. The speed of Victoria East. The Titans are a fast team and playing on the turf at the Alamodome will help them out. For Victoria East, they haven’t had to play too much pass defense over the last half of the season. So its secondary will be tested against the pass happy Patriots.

This game can be seen live on U Stream at the following link:

The winner gets to play state powerhouse Lake Travis as they won over Kerrville Tivy last night. That game will be next Saturday at Noon at the San Antonio Alamodome.
