Brownsville Man Injures Two In New Year’s Shooting

Michael Ruiz Arrested on 7 Counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon.

BROWNSVILLE–A Brownsville man, who officers said was upset about a family member getting assaulted at a New Year’s Eve party in a Westside neighborhood, fires several gunshots into a crowd, injuring two.

Michael Ruiz, 21, was arrested on seven counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, unlawful carrying of a weapon, evading arrest and possession of marijuana.

Police report Ruiz fired a handgun into a crowd of people on the 300 block Granjeno Ave. shortly before 2 am on New Year’s Day. He reportedly was upset because his little brother was beaten up at the party earlier.

Two people , ages 36 and 12, were hit by the flying bullets and taken to the hospital. They were treated and released.

A judge arraigned Ruiz and set his bond at $219,000. He remains in the Cameron County Jail.
