HIDALGO–Border Patrol Agents found about 340 pounds of marijuana inside a drain pipe near the Hidalgo Port of Entry last Friday.
Agents said they received a report of suspicious activity near an auto parts store on South Bridge St. and International Blvd in Hidalgo.
When they checked out the scene, they noticed a manhole cover had recently been moved in the parking lot.
After looking into the drainage area, they could see two bundles of marijuana. Agents also saw two voices and saw two people briefly moving bundles of marijuana through the drain towards the Rio Grande and the Mexican border.
The two people got away and were last seen swimming across the river into Mexico.
Authorities found eight bundles of marijuana in the drain pipe area and said the drugs were worth more than $250,000. The marijuana was turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.
