WASHINGTON DC–The 112th session of Congress started Wednesday with its largest class of Republican freshman congressman, including Blake Farenthold from Corpus Christi, and they are hoping make a splash right away.
Farenthold was one of 63 Republicans to capture seats over Democrats and turn over the power of the U.S. House of Representatives to the GOP.
Farenthold upset 14-term incumbent Solomon Ortiz in a close election and many were surprised he was able to beat the veteran Democrat from the Coastal Bend.
Farenthold will represent the Coastal Bend and the lower Rio Grande Valley as the 27th District Congressional member for a two-year term.
In press accounts, he said the following about his first day in office: “I see us as the conscience of the Congress,” said Farenthold. “We are the ones closest to the voters and even the leadership recognizes that.”
So Republicans now have power in the lower house and have elected Rep. John Boehner (R-Ohio) as Speaker of the House.
Farenthold said he is looking forward to his term in office.
