San Benito Man Pleads Guilty in Three Rivers Escape

Secundino Mata Escaped Last September and Still At-Large

CORPUS CHRISTI–A San Benito man plead guilty to helping his cousin escape from Three River Federal Prison and harboring him for one day.

Secundino Mata was serving a 14 year prison sentence in Three Rivers Prison Camp for money and drug laundering after he was convicted in 2008.

His cousin, David Mares Jr. confessed to driving from San Benito to Three Rivers to pick him up on September 16th in the Coastal Bend and then harboring him on September 18th.

As soon as Mares entered his plea, Federal Judge Hayden Head revoked his bond and ordered him into federal custody.

He will be sentenced on March 31 at 9 am. Mares faces up to 3 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

The U.S. Marshal’s Service conducted the investigation leading to the arrest of Mares and is still searching for Mata. If you have any information about his whereabouts, you should call the agency at (877) WANTED2.
