EDINBURG–More than 6,400 pounds of marijuana worth nearly $6.4 million was seized in a 24 hour period in the Rio Grande Valley on Tuesday.
Near Penitas, agents saw three vehicles travelling north from the Rio Grande. When they tried to pull over the cars, all three bailed out and swam back to Mexico.
Inside the vehicles, they found more than 2,200 pounds of marijuana worth $1.8 million.
Nearly 2,000 pounds of marijuana was seized on the Rio Grande near Weslaco after agents saw about 20 people loading bundles of the drugs into a car.
When agents approached them, everybody got away, but they found 131 bundles of marijuana worth about $1.5 million.
Border Patrol agents report several other seizures on Tuesday. When it was all done, they seized 6,400 pounds of marijuana and the drugs were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.
