AUSTIN–The 82nd State Legislative Session started in Austin one of its most challenging sessions with its largest group of freshman state leaders in 40 years.
There were three new Republican leaders and one new Democrat leader getting swore in from the Coastal Bend.
That includes Republicans State Rep. Connie Scott, who represents the Northwest part of Nueces County, State Rep. Raul Torres, who represents the Southside of Corpus Christi, State Rep. Joe Aliseda, who represents Beeville and Alice, and Democrat State Rep. J.M. Lozano, who represents the Kingsville area.
State Rep. Torres said on his Facebook account he was glad to be in office and happy people came from the Coastal Bend to see the first day of the session.
“Thank you to all our fellow Coastal bend supporters for visiting us in Austin,” said State Rep. Torres.
All of the new state leaders then voted to elect San Antonio Republican Joe Straus to a second term as Speaker of the Texas House.
Facing a $15 billion deficit, state leaders know it will be a tough session, but the Governor promised they will focus on priorities and they won’t raise taxes.
