SOUTH PADRE ISLAND–A South Padre Island economic leader may soon face more severe criminal charges after police said a man she hit while under the influence of alcohol died.
Darlene Lapeyre is facing two counts of intoxication manslaughter. South Padre Island Police report she was involved in an accident last weekend, hitting two Winter Texans on a motorcycle.
Lapeyre, who is the South Padre Island Economic Development Corporation Director, crashed into a vehicle with Jimmy Anklam, 63, and his wife on Padre Boulevard at 6 pm last Saturday. Anklam died Monday afternoon from injuries involved in the accident.
Police said Lapeyre was under the influence of alcohol and she was arrested. She spent the night in jail.
Officers are running toxicology tests. Once those tests are returned, then Lapeyre may face an intoxication manslaughter charge for the death of Anklam.
