RIO GRANDE CITY–Border Patrol Agents working in Rio Grande City confiscated more than 1,000 pounds of marijuana in two seizures on Thursday.
The largest of the seizures occurred Thursday morning near Escobares in Starr County when agents saw several people carrying large bundles of marijuana toward a pickup truck. As they approached the group and identified themselves as federal agents, the smugglers dropped their bundles and fled into thick brush.
The driver of the pickup immediately sped away from the area as well. At the scene agents found more than 500 pounds of marijuana valued over $425,000.
Later that night, agents seized nearly 500 additional pounds of marijuana valued over $380,000 near La Casita in Starr County. They were also able to catch one person with the help of a helicopter from Customs and Border Protection’s Office of Air and Marine.
Both of the marijuana seizures were turned over to other agencies for further investigation.
