BROWNSVILLE–For the second time in a few weeks, a Brownsville minister and his wife have been arrested on fraud charges ane are accused of deceiving a victim for money.
Leonel Soto, 27, and Sandra Mendoza, 31, turned themselves into the Brownsville Police Department on Thursday after a warrant was issued for theft.
They are accused of soliciting money from a church-goer. Soto told his victim he needed checking account because he didn’t have one.
Soto claimed he was n the process of getting money wired to him so he could help out the needy in Mexico.
The victim agreed and deposited some checks into his account, but the wired money never came as Soto had promised.
The man later found out his account was overdrawn when checks from a closed account belonging to Sandra Mendoza were deposited.
Mendoza is the wife of Soto. Investigators believe the two worked a scheme together to defraud the man. He is the second victim and it’s believed this happened in late November and early December.
The two were arrested and their bond was set at $5,000.
