Joe Cottens BBQ Restaurant Destroyed by Fire

ROBSTOWN–An iconic barbecue restaurant on Highway 77 in Robstown was destroyed tonight in what is believed to be an electrical fire.

Joe Cotten’s BBQ started in 1947 as a beer joint and grew into a popular eatery off the highway. Many people on the way to Central Texas or to the Rio Grande Valley would stop off to eat there.

Around 5:50 pm with 60 customers inside of the restaurant, a blaze erupted and the building went up in flames. Everybody got out and nobody was injured in the fire.

Firefighters from the area rushed to the scene and did their best to save the building, but it wasn’t enough. An electrical problem may have sparked the fire, though fire commanders wouldn’t comment on that.

The Cotten Family said they are happy nobody was injured in the fire, especially any workers. They plan to rebuild, but first must talk to their insurance company to figure out how long it will take.
