EDINGBURG– U.S. Border Patrol agents seized nearly 3,000 pounds of marijuana worth more than $2.2 million in one day.
The largest of the seizures occurred Tuesday evening in the Rio Grande City and agents noticed fresh footprints leading into a wooded area.
The agents followed the trail and found a large underground bunker in the brush that had been disguised with a piece of plywood and dirt. The agents found close to 1,200 pounds of marijuana stuffed inside.
Earlier in the day, agents spotted a rapidly moving dust cloud from possibly a vehicle driving away from the border. Agents found that the driver of a vehicle had lost control and rolled over into an orange grove.
The driver of the vehicle had been ejected and was unable to stand and he taken the man to a nearby hospital. The man was released from the hospital with no substantial injuries and was turned over to Border Patrol.
Inside the rolled-over vehicle agents found more than 650 pounds of marijuana valued at more than $525,000.
All the marijuana seized on Tuesday was turned over to various agencies for further investigation.
