Victoria Man Sentenced in Child Porn Case

CORPUS CHRISTI–A Corpus Christi Federal Judge sentenced a Victoria man to 10 years in federal prison for receiving and distributing child pornography.

U.S. District Court Judge John Rainey handed down the 10year sentence and ordered Jerry Wayne Mooney, 41, to register as a sex offender and serve a 10yearterm of supervised release at a hearing held Monday afternoon.

Mooney pleaded guilty to both federal felony offenses last December. Judge Rainey revoked Mooney’s bond immediately after handing down the sentence and ordered him into the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.

At the time of his guilty plea, Mooney admitted that he had used an online file sharing program to search for and acquire child pornography consisting of images and videos of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct in May 2010.

Mooney’s illegal conduct was discovered by an undercover Corpus Christi Police Department (CCPD) officer who used the same file sharing program to identify and download images of child pornography directly from Mooney.

A federal search warrant executed by FBI agents at Mooney’s Victoria home in June 2010 resulted in the discovery and seizure of a hard drive containing hundreds of images and videos of child pornography, dozens of which had been previously identified as real victims by the National Center For Missing and Exploited Children.

In deciding the sentence, Judge Rainey considered the real and continuing harm done to children whose instances of abuse were recorded and proliferated on the Internet as well as the need to protect the public from the future dangerousness Mooney presents.
