RIO GRANDE CITY–U.S. Border Patrol agents in Rio Grande City area seized more than 1,600 pounds of marijuana and arrested two men Thursday.
The marijuana was confiscated in three separate events, the largest of which occurred near the Rio Grande in the La Prieta Ranch when agents saw several people loading bundles of marijuana into a GMC Yukon.
When the agents approached the group, the vehicle was immediately driven north away from the river. Shortly after speeding past agents who were responding to the area, the Yukon’s driver lost control of the vehicle causing it to roll over.
The driver busted out the passenger window and attempted to flee but was quickly caught and arrested.
More than 900 pounds of marijuana were found inside the Yukon and on the ground around it. The driver was taken to Starr County Memorial Hospital for evaluation.
In another incident near Roma, agents followed a vehicle loaded with marijuana back to the river. Near the river, the driver was quickly apprehended by agents after he jumped out of the vehicle wearing a life jacket.
Inside the vehicle agents found 12 bundles of marijuana.
Both of the men who were arrested will be turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration for further investigation.
The marijuana from yesterday’s seizures has an estimated value of more than $1.3 million.
