EDINBURG–U.S. Border Patrol agents confiscated nearly 17,000 pounds of marijuana in multiple seizures throughout the Rio Grande Valley Sector over the last two days.
Agents at Falfurrias Checkpoint netted the largest amount Wednesday evening when a man attempted to drive a narcotics-laden tractor-trailer through the checkpoint.
While an agent was conducting an immigration inspection on the driver, a Border Patrol K-9 detected the odor of marijuana coming from the trailer.
During a more extensive search of the vehicle agents found more than 8,000 pounds of marijuana hidden within a load of limes.
The driver was arrested and will be turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration along with the marijuana, which has an estimated value of more than $6.4 million.
Several more seizures throughout the sector netted nearly 9,000 additional pounds of marijuana and pushed the two-day total to more than $13.5 million.
