Hidalgo Judge Gets Probation in Abuse Case

EDINBURG–A jury ordered a Hidalgo County Justice of the Peace to pay a fine and probation for being too harsh on teens who got in trouble for truancy in the Rio Grande Valley.

The jury found Justice of the Peace Mary Alice Palacios on two counts of official oppression earlier this month.

She was accused of misconduct when it came to dealing with truancy cases in her courtroom in the Edinburg area.

The jury fined her $8,000 and gave her probation. The length of the probation will be determined at a hearing in April.
