BP Seizes More Than $6 Million in Marijuana

EDINBURG–Border Patrol Agents seized more than $6.2 million worth of marijuana during a three day following the Christmas Holiday.

The largest amount of marijuana was netted Tuesday by agents assigned to the McAllen Station when they interrupted a smuggling attempt near the Rio Grande south of Penitas.

Smugglers were loading two vehicles with large bundles. When they noticed agents coming, they abandoned the marijuana and crossed the river to Mexico.

Agents patrolling the river by boat recovered several bundles on the riverbank and a helicopter from the Texas Department of Public Safety arrived to provide assistance.  In all, agents confiscated more than 2,400 pounds of marijuana.

Additionally, one of the vehicles was reported stolen out of San Juan, Texas, and was turned over to the San Juan Police Department.

Another large load of marijuana was seized that same day near La Casita by agents assigned to the Rio Grande City Station, who encountered a marijuana-laden pickup truck driving north away from the river.

When the driver of the pickup saw the agents, he made an abrupt U-turn and sped back to the river, where he abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. Agents found more than 1,000 pounds of marijuana in the bed of the truck.

Other  seizures from Monday through Wednesday pushed the total amount of marijuana seized to more than 7,700 pounds. It was turned over to the appropriate agencies for further investigation.
