Two years after he toppled a major Democratic leader in the Coastal Bend, now a Corpus Christi State Representative is setting his sights on beating a long time leader from South Texas.
Raul Torres, who is the State Rep. for District 33, announced Thursday he is running for State Senator and will be taking on Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa, who is the current State Senator from District 20.
“Today, I filed to run for State Senate District 20 to make sure the hard working families of South Texas and the Coastal Bend have their voice heard in the State Senate,” said Torres in a press release.
Torres, a Republican, who beat Solomon Ortiz Jr. two years ago in a major upset, believes Hispanics will decide this election. With more switching to the GOP, he said they are doing that to secure a better future for families.
“I’m encouraged and humbled by the support I’ve received from Democrats, Republicans and Independents to run for Senate District 20. They support my plan to create jobs, improve our children’s schools, end waste in government and stop higher taxes,” said Torres.
The 20th district for State Senate started in Nueces County and goes to Hidalgo County.
