ALICE–Authorities said a man who was a victim of a gang-related shooting is charged with murder after he exchanged gunfire with his assailants and killed one of them.
Israel Chavez, who is from Eagle Pass and was an oil field worker, was arrested for murder and two charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. His bond was set at $700,000.
Police report four men went to Chavez’ home on North Johnson at a mobile home park around 4:30 Saturday morning and fired shots at him.
Chavez, 24, fired back, hitting and killing Jacob Morales, 23. He also struck two other men and there was a fourth man who drove the men to the location.
Investigators said the men were trying to leave the scene of the shooting with Morales dead in the car when they arrived at the scene.
Robert Cheverra and Gregorio Vargas, both 19, were treated at the hospital. Cheverra was released this morning, while Vargas remains there.
Mike Flores, 34, was the driver of the car and was unarmed at the time of the shooting.
A judge arraigned Flores and Cheverra on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and engaging in a criminal activity. Bond for the men was set at $150,000. Vargas will face the same charges when he’s released from the hospital.
This marks the fifth murder in this quiet town that’s booming with business from the oil and gas industry.
