BROWNSVILLE–The U.S. Coast Guard is looking for two shrimpers who left Brownsville and never made it to their final destination in Mexico.
The federal agency reported in a press release Manuel Gallardo Castillo and Fausto Gomez Junior boarded a shrimp vessel called El Abuelo headed for Tampico, Mexico on Friday.
The Coast Guard in Corpus Christi received a call Saturday afternoon saying the vessel didn’t arrive in Mexico.
Commanders launched a Falcon airplane and a crew to search along route of the shrimping boat. They have issued an alert for boaters to be on the lookout for the two and the shrimping boat from Brownsville to Tampico.
“The first phase of any search is information gathering,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Shawn McGivern, command duty officer for the 8th Coast Guard District command center. “This helps us direct our efforts, our personnel and assets, so that we’re able to use them to the best of their abilities.
The Coast Guard said they are following up on information they filed with their agency before taking off on their trip.
“In this case, we were pretty fortunate, because the men we’re searching for filed a float plan,” McGivern said “This allows us a valuable piece of information that takes a lot of the guess work out of this phase of the search.”
