KINGSVILLE–A Victoria native was brutally murder in what authorities are calling a robbery in Kleberg County last weekend.
Authorities arrested Michael Lerma, 20, of Riviera and charged him with capital murder. His bond was set at $1 million.
It’s believed Lerma went to the home of Frank Wearden, 34, last Sunday morning. Investigators said he beat and stabbed him to death.
Witnesses told investigators Wearden was last seen living a nightclub in Kingsville Sunday morning at closing time. Later, neighbors could hear some commotion at his home in Riviera.
Wearden was found near a ditch by his home Sunday afternoon, according to the sheriff investigators.
They said Lerma took Wearden’s truck and tried to use his credit cards at a local convenience store. He was found with the dead man’s truck at his home in Riviera.
Wearden, a military veteran, was a graduate of St. Joseph High School in Victoria, was attending Texas A & M Kingsville.
His family stated in news accounts he had no enemies and was always helping people.
