Corpus Christi Man Gets Sentenced For Threatening Detention Officer

CORPUS CHRISTI–A Corpus Christi will spend four more years in federal prison after he threatened a detention guard and his family while being held at a facility in the Corpus Christi area.

Richard Soto, 33, was sentenced Tuesday to 52 months for threatening to assault an officer of the Coastal Bend Detention Center as well as the officer’s 11-year-old daughter, federal prosecutors said.

Soto was convicted in 2002 of being a felon in possession of a firearm and sentenced to prison after which he was required to serve three years of supervised release.
Rearrested in July 2011, Senior U.S. District Judge Hayden Head sentenced him to another 12 months of incarceration for violating that supervised release.

Housed in the Coastal Bend Detention Center in a segregation unit, he threatened an officer at the facility last November. He also threatened the officer’s daughter whom he had seen in the Corpus Christi community with the officer prior to being rearrested.

At trial, the government presented evidence that Soto, angered by the fact he was not being allowed out of his cell for recreation, threatened to assault and sodomize both the officer and his daughter, made references to having a firearm, stated he would not always be locked up and that he would find the officer.
The jury convicted him on all counts. U.S. District Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos handed Soto the sentence, which will be served consecutively the remaining sentence he is serving on the supervised release violation. He will then serve three years on supervised release.
