I will be working the game between Sharyland and Rivera on Thursday. You can say the Raiders aren’t afraid of stiff competition. They have played two of the best teams in the RGV already in Weslaco East and Edinburg North. They lost two games they could have won. They are playing the Sharyland Rattlers who have beaten a top team in the Valley and Laredo. We know they can play offense, but can Sharyland play some defense? It should be a good matchup.
Friday night…I will be headed to Boggus Stadium to watch Harlingen vs. McAllen. These teams both traveled to San Antonio and got beat up. It was a good test for these Valley teams, but now the Cardinals will try to get back on track. The question who’s playing quarterback for Harlingen. McAllen bounced back with a big win over Edinburg 32-6. This game won’t be so easy and both coaches will find out how good they are early in the season.
Other games to watch in the Lower Valley:
McAllen Memorial vs, San Benito: The Greyhounds won big the first week and ran the ball, but were defeated soundly in the 2nd game. McAllen Memorial won last week after getting beat by Sharyland the first week.
La Feria vs. Mercedes: The Lions have won two easy games against lesser opponents. Now they step it up against Mercedes who lost to Calallen, then came back to beat Rowe.
Hidalgo vs. Port Isabel: These two schools are old rivals and they know each other well. Hidalgo won last week after getting beat by Pioneer in Week 1. PI has won both games over two Starr County teams. The first week they look impressive over Grulla, but last week it was sloppy with lots of penalties and bad pass defense in the win over Rio Grande City. Coach Monty Stumbaugh said this is a young team and they must show up to play every week. Let’s see what happens this week.
Harlingen South vs. Weslaco East: Weslaco East is a running machine. They haven’t passed for one yard, but have been using its running attack. Harlingen South was upset by Edinburg Vela and coaches said a lot of changes may be in order. They’ll find out if they made the right choices in this game.
Rio Hondo vs. Sinton: Rio Hondo has looked in its first two games led by its defense. Sinton always has a good team and they play well at home. The Bobcats will find out if they are ready to step up to the next level and challenge for a district title.
Donna vs. Hanna: Donna lost a tough one last week, but won the same type of game in Week 1. They’ll play Hanna who beat Mission last week easily. Coach Rene Medrano wants to see how his team will match up against the Redskins.
