It’s the streak nobody really talks about in the Rio Grande Valley.
The Port Isabel Tarpons have the second longest active regular season winning streak. They have won 15 games in a row and it’s the longest winning streak in school history. The longest current winning streak in the Valley is held by Sharyland at 25 games.
The last loss nearly two years ago versus Hidalgo 16-12 against Shea Patterson, who later moved to Louisiana where he won a state championship last year and has signed a letter of intent to go to the University of Southern California.
Coach Monty Stumbaugh said he wasn’t aware how long the streak was and really his team doesn’t worry about it.
“I don’t think about it,” said Stumbaugh from his office in Port Isabel. “We are trying to get to 1-0 every week and that’s our goal.”
Tonight, they play Valley View, who is winless. They were shut out by PSJA Southwest and Laredo Cigarroa and lost by a touchdown to Zapata.
Other big game: Harlingen vs. Weslaco. Both teams are battling to get a win before district play starts. The Cardinals (0-2 ) are winless after a tough loss last week to McAllen in the closing seconds. They are down to the third string quarterback, though they won’t say if backup Jesus Castro can play tonight with a knee injury. Weslaco (1-2) lost by three TD to King from Corpus Christi and barely beat Donna two weeks ago. They are hoping to get some more offense tonight and play tough defense. You can expect a lot of running and tough defense in this game.
It’s a slow week due to byes for the Brownsville schools and Sams Stadium is dark this week. Also, Los Fresnos, San Benito, Raymondville and Harlingen South have byes.
