The big sports story of the weekend from Rio Grande Valley is the end of the 26-game winning streak for Sharyland. They went down to defeat Friday to Laredo Alexander in a great game. It now means the longest regular season winning streak is in Port Isabel. They haven’t lost in two years and that last loss came against Hidalgo. Since then, they have run off 16 straight in regular season play.
For the Lower Valley, the game of the week will be in Port Isabel. The Tarpons are two of four undefeated teams left in the RGV and they’ll be playing St. Joseph’s Academy, another undefeated team. Port Isabel has played two 5A teams and beat them easily. They also have competed against some tough teams in 4A. They turned the ball over four times in their last game and didn’t even play their starting quarterback who was injured. St. Joe’s has beat some good teams, including Raymondville. The game vs. PI will be the biggest test for Freshman QB Kai Money. The Bloodhounds have played the Tarpons the last few years and the games have been dominated by Port Isabel.
Harlingen bounced back from a heartbreaking loss to McAllen and won a tight one over Weslaco. They scored late in the game after a bad hike on a punt to win 30-29. The Cardinals are playing their third and fourth string quarterbacks who were on JV to start the year. The defense has been giving up nearly 200 rush yards the last two weeks. Coach Manny Gomez was relieved to finally get his first win before district play. They start off against Rivera High School who had a bye. The Raiders have played one of the toughest non-district schedules. They are 0-3, losing to Sharyland, Weslaco East and Edinburg North.
Other winners from the Lower Valley in Week 4 were St. Joe over Pharr Oratory in the Holy Bowl, La Feria over Sharyland Pioneer, Santa Rosa beat La Villa, Rio Hondo came out victorious vs. Hidalgo and Lyford lost against Mathis.
Seventeen teams were off on byes, including all of the Brownsville ISD teams and Sams Stadium was dark. The teams will be back in action this week with the start of district play in 6A and 5A districts. The big game will be Edinburg Vela vs. Sharyland in the Upper Valley. It’s the Fox Sports Southwest High School Game of the Week.
The other issue is the weather. The Valley was in the worst drought ever and now it has been raining over the last four Fridays. Games were delayed this last Friday and Rio Hondo vs. Hidalgo was postponed until Saturday. One of those games with a long delay was Port Isabel vs. Valley View. Most of the rain in Week 4 impacted the Upper Valley around the Pharr area. In Week 3, it was all over the Valley and they were a number of delays. Hanna vs. Donna was cancelled. Rain is expected in the forecast all week. We will find out as we get closer to game time in Week 5, if it will cause any delays or postponements.
