BROWNSVILLE–Watch out for Porter Nation.
The Cowboys (2-2) took advantage of some turnovers in the 2nd Half against Donna North (0-4) to over a 14-3 deficit and won easily 31-21. Porter used a strong running game behind RG George Gutierrez who rumbled for 151 yards and two touchdowns.
Donna North was eyeing its first victory after taking an early lead over Porter. They then turned the ball over twice in the second half, giving the Cowboys good field position. They scored two touchdowns off those turnovers and outscored the Chiefs by 14 in the 2nd Half.
Fans were going crazy as Porter won for the second time this year on Homecoming Night. They broke a 25 game losing streak earlier this season. The Cowboys are 1-0 in District 32-5A and atop the standings.
Porter will face Edcouch Elsa next week, while Donna North plays Mercedes.
Week 5 Previews
Port Isabel vs. St. Joseph’s Academy– This is one of the bigger games in the Lower Valley. Both teams are undefeated and only four are left in the Rio Grande Valley.
The Tarpons have the longest regular season winning streak at 16 games in the Valley. Port Isabel is reloading this year and hoping to get ready for a tough new district in 4A.
St. Joe’s hasn’t really played any tough teams other than Raymondville and they are undefeated behind Freshman QB Kai Money. He lives on the South Padre Island and opted to go to St. Joe’s instead of Port Isabel.
Tonight, Money will be playing for pride and we will find out if the Bloodhounds are for real. Port Isabel is ready for the challenge and know it won’t be an easy game.
Harlingen South vs. Brownsville Veterans Memorial–This game will have a playoff atmosphere. Many predict this game the winner of this game will be one of the teams get one of the final spots in the District 32-6A playoff.
Rivera vs. Harlingen– The Harlingen Cardinals begin district play against a tough opponent in Rivera. The Raiders have played a tough non-district schedule, including Sharyland, and are winless. The Cards lost their quarterback and also have played a tough non-district schedule, including games against McAllen and Weslaco. The injuries at quarterback may open the door for Rivera, but Harlingen will have to play its tough defense to win.
Other games involving the Lower Valley teams tonight: Los Fresnos vs. Lopez, Mercedes vs. Pace, La Villa vs. Bruni, Progreso vs. La Feria, Raymondille vs. Kingsville, Rio Hondo vs. Grulla and Hanna vs. San Benito (Saturday).
Predictions for 32-6A: Harlingen, Los Fresnos, Brownsville Veterans Memorial and it’s battle for the fourth spot between Hanna, Rivera and Harlingen South. Hanna gets that last spot with Harlingen as the district champs.
