RIO HONDO–Two Coastal Bend teams will invade the Rio Grande Valley in a showdown for first place in 4A-District 16 for Division I and II. The winner of these games will control their own destiny to win district. So far this year, Valley teams haven’t fared well against teams from outside the RGV, though their records are a bit better vs. Coastal Bend teams.

Rio Hondo Players vs Port Isabel

Orange Grove will come to Rio Hondo (6-1, 2-0) to play the Bobcats. Orange Grove (6-1, 2-0) will be riding on the arm of QB Hondo Harris. The Bulldogs are hoping Harris will pass them to victory. Rio Hondo Coach Rocky James says this is one of his best defenses in years. They stood up to the test last week against Port Isabel, ending their 19-game regular season winning streak. The Bobcats will have to bring their A game to beat Orange Grove.

Kingsville (3-4, 1-0) will come to La Feria (6-1, 2-0) riding a two game winning streak. They won by one point over Ingleside and Zapata at home. The Brahmas are a young team that has played a strong schedule. The Lions aren’t used to first place at this time of the year. Over the last few years, they were in a district dominated by Port Isabel. They are enjoying this new district and have played the easier part of the schedule so far as they still need to play Zapata. If they win the next two games, they will be district champs.

Porter Cowboys Win

Donna vs. Porter–Donna Redskins (3-4, 2-2) will come to the Brownsville Sams Stadium for the second time on a Thursday night. Tonight, they will  play the Porter Cowboys (2-5, 1-3). The Redskins are in fourth place in 5-A District 32. If they win the rest of the games, they make the playoffs. Porter can play the role of spoiler. They cannot be overlooked. They have put together some good games, but turnovers have hurt them.

Brownsville Veterans Memorial vs. Harlingen–The Harlingen Cardinals (3-4, 2-2) will try to avoid a three game losing streak in 6A-District 32 play against Veterans Memorial (5-2, 3-1). Injuries, especially at quarterback, have hurt the Cardinals all year long. They are hoping to get a win and get out of fourth place in the district. Vets Memorial is trying to bounce back after a tough loss against San Benito. They lost a shootout last Saturday 67-57. The Chargers have enough offense, but can their defense lead them to victory over Harlingen.
