BROWNSVILLE–Victories by Harlingen and Rivera High School clouded the playoff picture for 6A-District 32 that has only one team in at this point with two weeks to play.
San Benito is undefeated in district play at 5-0 and needs just one more win to clinch the championship for this competitive league. So far, the Greyhounds are the only team in the playoffs. Many never expected San Benito would be sitting in the driver’s seat to win this district. They beat Los Fresnos, Harlingen and Veterans Memorial over a three-week period. A victory this week over Harlingen South and they will be crowned district champs.
After that, it’s a free for all with only Lopez eliminated from playoff contention. You have six teams battling for three playoff positions, though Harlingen South and Hanna have big uphill battles. This week could eliminate some teams.
The biggest game of the week is Los Fresnos vs. Veterans Memorial. A few weeks ago, both the Chargers and Falcons looked like a lock for the playoffs, but both were beaten last week. The winner of this game will have a big advantage heading into the last week of play. Veterans Memorial hopes to avoid its third straight loss. Still, Los Fresnos is playing its last home game of the season so the Falcons will be pumped up to win this game.
Many doubted Harlingen and its defense during a two game losing streak against San Benito and Los Fresnos, but the Cardinals came up with a huge effort in beating Veterans Memorial. Harlingen is playing Lopez and Harlingen South over the last two weeks and control its own destiny.
Rivera and Hanna play Saturday night in a big battle. Rivera has won three games in a row and they are in second place in this district. A victory this week will eliminate Hanna. The Eagles have been playing better. They have a slim chance of making the playoffs, but need to win out against Rivera and Los Fresnos.
If there is a tie-breaker, it gets interesting. The first tie breaker is head-to-head competition. If there are more than two teams tied, then it goes to a total point system scored with the maximum a team can get is 18 points for a victory. This could be used to break the tie for the playoffs due to the Rivera and Harlingen victories. If Hanna wins this week, it could be interesting last week of the season.
