MERCEDES–The fight for the playoffs in Conference 5A-District 32 is for third and fourth place as there are four teams battling for the final two positions. The two top teams are Mercedes and Edcouch-Elsa and the Tigers are running away with the district.
Mercedes has been solid and is on a seven game winning streak after losing to Calallen to begin the season. They have beaten Donna and Edcouch-Elsa. The Tigers are hoping to end district play undefeated as they must still play PSJA Southwest and Porter.
Edcouch-Elsa is in second place firmly entrenched. They started out with two losses with a young team. Since then, they have won five out of six with its only blemish a three point loss to Mercedes. They will play Pace and Donna to end the season.
After that, PSJA Southwest, Donna, Pace and PSJA are the teams vying for third and fourth place in this district. Clearly, PSJA Southwest is the surprise team here. They are 3-2 in district play, but face Mercedes and Pace to finish the season. That final game may be for the playoffs.
Donna is 3-2 in district and the Redskins have improved as the season has progressed. The offense has adjusted after losing its starting quarterback in the last scrimmage. They play Donna North and Edcouch-Elsa to end the season.
Right now, Pace and PSJA are on the outside looking in. Pace (2-3) plays EE and PSJA Southwest during those final two weeks. A switch at quarterback has fueled the Vikings drive for the playoffs. They will have to win these two games to be considered a contender for the playoffs.
PSJA has played the hardest part of their district schedule. The Bears are 2-3, but have Porter and Donna North left on the schedule. They are hoping for one of the teams ahead of them to slip and lose so they can get become playoff eligible.
Porter and Donna North are the two teams that won’t qualify for the playoffs this year. Both teams have played well at times, but little mistakes have hurt them. The Cowboys are hoping to end the season with a third win. Donna North just wants to get in the win column and can play role of spoiler this week as they face cross town foe Donna.
