Here is the playoff schedule for Week 1 of the playoffs. We have some rematches in the first round from the regular season. 27 Valley teams will continue playing with 8 matchups amongs RGV schools.
Probably, the biggest one is Weslaco vs. Harlingen. It’s at Boggus Stadium on Friday night. Both teams have improved since the Week 3 matchup and won a district title, though the Cardinals shared it with three other teams. The Panthers lost a heart breaker after they took the lead over Harlingen in the 4th quarter. All they had to do was punt away the ball and a bad snap cost them the game, 30-29.
Los Fresnos will travel to Edinburg North. These two teams played to open the season. The Falcons jumped out to an early lead and were cruising going into the 2nd Half. The Cougars came roaring back and won on a last second field goal, 22-19.
San Benito @ Weslaco East: These two teams played in the second game of the season on September 4th. Weslaco East dominated San Benito, 42-14. Both are coming off losses in Week 11. Weslaco East lost to Weslaco for the district championship. The Greyhounds lost their last two games of the season and ended up sharing a district title with three other teams.
Other games to watch will be
McAllen vs. Laredo Alexander. Laredo Alexander upset Sharyland early in the season in Sharyland. They also lost to Alice who didn’t make the playoffs. So McHigh shouldn’t look past this team.
Rivera vs PSJA North: The Raiders are the hottest team in the Valley after losing their first five games in what was one of the toughest non-district schedules in the RGV. They won five in a row. It’s a battle of Raiders and both of these teams are 5-5 overall.
Donna vs. Mission Veterans: The Redskins have come back to clinch a playoff spot. They have their starting quarterback playing after an injury knocked him in the last scrimagge of the season. They looked impressive in beating Edcouch-Elsa 34-7. Mission Veterans came in third place behind Sharyland and Edinburg Vela.
Edcouch-Elsa vs Sharyland: This is a battle of two heavyweight programs from the RGV. Sharyland and EE have a rich tradition. This game will be played at Sharyland.
Mercedes vs. Roma: Mercedes has won nine game in a row after getting shut out by Calallen to start the season. They really haven’t been tested and were undefeated in district play. Roma made the playoffs for the first time ever in its school history.
