There are not too many Valley teams that have enjoyed that lately. Getting to the third round is the hardest part. Usually, it’s Tarpon Blue that gets that far, but Port Isabel is out of it this year.
Rivera, Weslaco East, Los Fresonos and Sharyland are trying to get there. All four teams are in the region semifinals and have tough match ups in Kingsville, Corpus Christi and San Antonio.
RIVERA VS. SAN ANTONIO BRANDEIS–Rivera has had a great run, winning seven in a row after losing its five games. They have beaten all Valley teams en route to the Region Semis. It’s the first time they are there since 1999 and only the second time Rivera has made it this far. They beat PSJA North and McAllen in thrillers.
San Antonio Brandeis is a better team than those teams. They run and pass the ball well. They beat Corpus Christi Carroll 63-14 and Johnson 38-10. This is a juggernaut team from San Antonio. They have only one loss to Brennan throughout the season who lost to Cibolo Steele in the playoffs.
Rivera knows they will have to play their best game to win. They are hoping for no mistakes and good showing against San Antonio Brandeis at Texas A&M Kingsville Friday night.
WESLACO EAST VS. CIBOLO STEELE–Weslaco East doesn’t pass the ball much. They are a running team. That recipe worked well against Valley teams. Now their star running back Lupe Moron is hurt and they are a playing a state powerhouse in Cibolo Steele. They will be ready for the run heavy attack of the Wildcats. Cibolo Steele is no lightweight and they have played in state championships. They have great coaching and are looking to move past Weslaco East and play in the state quarterfinals.
SHARYLAND VS. CEDAR PARK–Sharyland beat the Calallen Wildcats in a 28-0. It was an impressive win for the Rattlers and the first time Calallen had ever lost to a Valley team in the playoffs in 28 tries. Calallen has a young team and aren’t the powerhouse they were in the past, but it gave Sharyland lots of confidence as they get ready for Cedar Park. Cedar Park is coming on strong . They are playing good football at the right time and are peaking. Sharyland will be ready and try to move onto the Region Finals with a victory at Heroes Stadium in San Antonio Friday night.
LOS FRESNOS VS. SAN ANTONIO REAGAN–Los Fresnos has played great defense in its ride to the playoffs and during the first two rounds. They beat a tough Del Rio team last week. Now they are playing San Antonio Reagan. Reagan beat Harlingen 42-0 to start the season off. They are hoping to continuing its dominance against Valley teams and move onto the next round. Game time is Saturday afternoon at 2 pm at Texas A&M Kingsville.
